In a significant political development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay has allocated the state’s lone vacant Rajya Sabha seat to alliance partner Congress, reinforcing ties between the two parties ahead of future electoral battles.
The decision is being viewed as a strategic move that highlights the importance of the Congress in supporting the minority TVK government in Tamil Nadu. With the ruling party lacking an independent majority in the Assembly, the support of Congress legislators remains crucial for government stability.
Meeting Sparks Speculation Over Congress Nominee
The announcement followed a meeting between senior Congress leader and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar and Chief Minister Vijay in Chennai. The meeting intensified speculation about the Congress candidate likely to be nominated for the Upper House seat.
Political observers believe Congress strategist Praveen Chakravarty could emerge as a strong contender. Chakravarty is widely credited with helping build the Congress-TVK alliance that reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in recent years.
Vacancy Created After AIADMK Leader’s Resignation
The Rajya Sabha vacancy arose after AIADMK leader C. V. Shanmugam resigned from Parliament following his election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The seat offered an opportunity for the ruling alliance to strengthen its parliamentary presence and further consolidate political cooperation.
Congress Welcomes the Decision
Congress leaders welcomed Vijay’s decision, calling it an important gesture of trust and partnership.
Congress MP Jothimani said the additional representation would strengthen the party’s voice in the Rajya Sabha and help it effectively raise national issues in Parliament.
Party leaders believe the seat will enhance Congress’ parliamentary strength while deepening coordination with TVK ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and future political contests in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry.
DMK Criticises the Move
The decision has drawn criticism from the opposition DMK.
DMK spokesperson A. Saravanan alleged that TVK was attempting to avoid direct confrontation with the BJP in Parliament by allowing Congress to take the lead role in raising opposition issues.
According to the DMK, the arrangement reflects a strategic division of responsibilities within the alliance rather than an independent parliamentary approach by TVK.
TVK Rejects Allegations
TVK leaders dismissed the criticism, stating that the allocation was aimed solely at strengthening alliance unity.
A senior party functionary maintained that the decision demonstrates commitment to coalition politics and reflects the importance of maintaining a strong partnership with Congress. Party leaders also argued that a single Rajya Sabha seat would have limited impact on TVK’s independent parliamentary presence, making alliance consolidation a more practical priority.
Political Significance Ahead of 2029
Political analysts view the move as a signal that the TVK-Congress partnership is likely to remain intact in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The Rajya Sabha seat allocation not only strengthens Congress representation in Parliament but also sends a message of alliance stability at a time when Tamil Nadu’s political landscape continues to evolve following major realignments among regional and national parties.
