Deep Depression Triggers Red Alert in Odisha; IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Risk

Odisha is likely to witness widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and yellow alerts across several districts.

The IMD has warned that the weather system could trigger flash flood-like conditions in 27 districts, with rainfall expected to continue until July 29. In view of the forecast, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has directed all district collectors to remain on high alert and take necessary precautionary measures.

Deep Depression Likely to Cross Odisha-West Bengal Coast

According to the IMD, the deep depression, which formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha–West Bengal coast, is expected to make landfall between Paradip and Sagar Island around noon on Monday.

As of 11:30 pm on Sunday, the weather system was located approximately 60 km south of Sagar Island, 80 km southeast of Digha, 150 km east-northeast of Chandbali, and 140 km east-southeast of Balasore.

Meteorologists have warned that the system is likely to bring intense rainfall, strong winds and localised flooding, particularly across northern and interior Odisha.

Red Alert for Three Districts

The IMD has issued a Red Alert for:

  • Sundargarh
  • Keonjhar
  • Mayurbhanj

These districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

A Yellow Alert has also been issued for 12 other districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

Schools and Anganwadi Centres Closed

As a precautionary measure, district administrations have ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday in:

  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Kendrapara
  • Mayurbhanj

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories.

Fishermen Asked to Stay Ashore

With sea conditions expected to remain rough, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until July 29. Coastal residents have also been urged to exercise caution as strong winds and high waves are likely along the Odisha coast.

Emergency response teams have been kept on standby, while district administrations are preparing for any rain-related emergencies, including waterlogging, flash floods and disruption to transport services.
