The United States Tennis Association (USTA) appointed Craig Tiley, former Tennis Australia chief, as its new CEO, marking a major leadership change in American tennis.

Tiley, 64, will assume his responsibilities in the coming months while coordinating with Tennis Australia’s board to ensure a smooth transition. He replaces Lew Sherr, who stepped down last year to join Major League Baseball’s New York Mets as president of business operations.

Tiley expressed excitement about returning to American tennis, noting his admiration for the USTA’s leadership and the success of the U.S. Open. He began his tennis journey in the United States as a college coach and now aims to help the USTA reach its ambitious goal of 35 million players by 2035.

During his 13-year tenure as Tennis Australia CEO and nearly two decades as Australian Open tournament director, Tiley championed innovation and player-first initiatives. Under his leadership, the Australian Open broke attendance and revenue records, becoming one of the world’s most successful global sporting events.

Before his administrative career, Tiley coached the University of Illinois men’s tennis team from 1994 to 2005, guiding them to an NCAA Division I National Championship in 2003 with a perfect 32–0 record.

USTA officials believe his experience and vision will strengthen American tennis, expand participation, and enhance the global profile of the U.S. Open.
