Tragedy struck the Indian diaspora in Germany as three Indian nationals—two women aged 25 and 27, and a 26-year-old man—were killed in a fierce residential building fire in the German city of Bochum.
German local media, citing details released by Bochum police and public broadcaster WDR, confirmed that authorities have arrested a 41-year-old resident of the building on suspicion of murder.
Details of the Incident and Rescue Operation
The fire broke out around 4:15 AM local time on Tuesday in a multi-family residential building located in Bochum’s Hofstede district.
- Fatalities and Injuries: Firefighters responding to the emergency discovered the three victims dead inside a second-floor apartment. Five other individuals sustained injuries primarily due to smoke inhalation and were rushed to local hospitals.
- Challenging Rescue: Emergency responders faced severe hurdles as flames rapidly spread up through the central stairwell, cutting off escape routes for residents on upper floors. Firefighters deployed turntable ladders, portable ladders, and safety cushions to rescue five people trapped inside.
Murder Investigation and Suspect Arrest
Initial findings by forensic teams and investigators have ruled out a technical defect, shifting the focus of the probe firmly toward suspected arson.
The homicide squad questioned a 41-year-old Romanian national who lived in the building. Following initial examinations, police and prosecutors announced his arrest on Wednesday on preliminary grounds of murder. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact motive and how the fire was initiated.
