Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a high-powered task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani to recommend sweeping reforms in India’s examination system.

The move comes in the wake of widespread student protests and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over paper leak controversies.

The task force, comprising eminent figures including former ISRO Chairman S. Somnath, ex-IB Director Tapan Deka, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena, will focus on revamping the National Testing Agency (NTA) exams. Its mandate includes introducing structural changes, leveraging technology, and ensuring transparency and reliability in the conduct of public examinations.

In a video message shared on X, Modi emphasised that the government has already initiated measures such as fast-track courts and is preparing to table the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The bill seeks to strengthen the 2024 law by introducing harsher punishments, time-bound investigations, and stricter provisions against organised malpractice.

The reforms aim to restore credibility in India’s examination system, safeguard students’ futures, and deter systemic fraud. Nilekani’s leadership is expected to bring a technology-driven approach to tackling long-standing challenges in the education sector.
