The death toll of Odia workers in the Tamil Nadu gas leak tragedy climbed to six after Jamuni Juanga of Keonjhar district died during treatment at a hospital in Tiruvallur.
She had been battling severe health complications caused by exposure to toxic ammonia gas following the leak at a seafood processing factory in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam. Earlier, five Odia workers—Gumani Juanga, Geeta Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Shibani Juanga, and Phulomani Juanga—lost their lives in the incident.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday when ammonia gas leaked from the factory’s refrigeration or processing system. Hazardous fumes spread rapidly, leaving workers gasping for breath and triggering panic inside the unit.
Around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand were present at the facility. Many experienced dizziness, breathing difficulties, and irritation, while some collapsed. Official figures confirm that 64 workers were affected, with several admitted to hospitals for treatment.
The Odisha government has deputed a three-member team to Tamil Nadu to coordinate relief and assist affected workers. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
Authorities continue to provide medical support to the injured and extend assistance to families. Investigations into the cause of the ammonia leak remain underway, highlighting concerns over industrial safety and the vulnerability of migrant workers.
