Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian resigned from the Union Council of Ministers after the BJP decided not to renominate him for another Rajya Sabha term.
His tenure ended on June 21, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed that President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.
Kurian also held charge as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The President accepted his resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with immediate effect.
Kurian was among the few ministers in the Union government representing the Christian community. His exit comes after the BJP skipped him in the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections. Another Union Minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, also faced a similar situation as his tenure ended without renomination.
Kurian’s departure marks a significant moment in the reshuffle of the BJP’s representation in the Rajya Sabha. His resignation underscores the party’s decision to restructure its ministerial lineup while balancing political priorities.
