A US content creator’s enthusiastic IKEA shopping trip has taken an unexpected turn after Indian viewers recognised her trendy “chrome” tableware as something remarkably familiar.
Amanda Monsen, a content creator from Texas, recently shared an Instagram video documenting her trip to IKEA in search of the metallic plates and trays she had been spotting on social media.
What began as a hunt for stylish chrome decor soon had Indian viewers laughing in the comments, with many pointing out that similar shiny metal plates, bowls and cutlery have been staples in Indian households for generations.
Amanda’s search for trendy chrome tableware
In the viral video, Amanda explained that she had become obsessed with the chrome aesthetic after repeatedly seeing shiny metallic plates and trays on social media.
She said she particularly liked how food looked when served on the reflective tableware and decided to visit IKEA to find similar pieces.
As she browsed the store, Amanda eventually spotted one of the trays she had been searching for. She excitedly showed it to the camera, revealing a price tag of $7.99 (around ₹765).
She suggested that the tray could be used in several ways beyond serving food, including as a perfume tray, a coffee-station accessory or a general organiser for small items.
She then discovered another set of metallic plates that caught her attention because of their indented design.
The four-piece set was priced at $14.99 (around ₹1,434), and Amanda said she was particularly excited about the find.
She also suggested using the plates to display perfumes and other small objects, before continuing her search for more chrome-inspired pieces.

Indians have a very different reaction
While Amanda viewed the metallic tableware as a stylish new decor discovery, Indian viewers quickly recognised something much more commonplace.
Several users pointed out that stainless-steel plates, bowls, spoons and other utensils have long been used in Indian homes.
One viewer jokingly suggested that Amanda should visit India if she wanted to find similar “chrome plates”, while another said the aesthetic being marketed as a contemporary trend had been part of everyday Indian dining for decades.
A third user joked that the West had seemingly just discovered stainless-steel plates, something Indian households have used for generations.
The comments quickly transformed the IKEA haul into a light-hearted cross-cultural conversation.
‘We’ve had these for decades’
The contrast between Amanda’s excitement over the trendy tableware and Indian viewers’ familiarity with it became the central joke in the comments.
For many Indian households, stainless-steel utensils are associated less with luxury decor and more with everyday meals, traditional kitchens and family dining.
The viral moment also highlighted how design trends can take familiar objects from one culture and reintroduce them elsewhere as fashionable or nostalgic decor.
Amanda’s IKEA haul may have been about finding the perfect chrome aesthetic, but for Indian viewers, the shiny plates and trays looked much closer to the everyday stainless-steel utensils already sitting in their kitchens.
