Actor Imran Khan has moved the Bombay High Court, seeking an urgent stay and cancellation of a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) notice directing him to leave India by October 28, following his detention during an anti-Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) protest in Mumbai.
According to the petition filed through advocates Zulfiquar Memon, Parvez Memon, and Chirag Naik, the actor has challenged the legality of the order and requested immediate judicial intervention. The matter is expected to be mentioned for an urgent hearing before the court.
The FRRO notice was issued after Imran Khan was detained during a protest held at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The demonstration was organised by groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Khan was among hundreds of protesters taken into custody during the agitation.
In his plea, Khan has sought suspension of the “Leave India” notice, quashing of the order, and directions to authorities to produce records and evidence relied upon while issuing the directive.
The petition contends that the authorities failed to clearly identify the specific law or rule allegedly violated by the actor. It also argues that officials did not adequately consider his status as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder before issuing the notice.
The case has drawn attention amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the anti-CEC protests and is likely to spark debate over the rights of OCI cardholders participating in public demonstrations and the procedural basis for immigration-related actions.
