Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday expressed deep grief over the tragic stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata that claimed 17 lives and left dozens injured.
In a statement, Majhi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. “Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic stampede in Kolkata. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath grant eternal peace to the departed souls and bless the injured with a speedy recovery,” he said.
The incident occurred around 7:40 pm on October 17 (Saptami evening) at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin (also referred to as Chorebagan/Sarada Park) Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata under the Girish Park police station area. Heavy rain, a large crowd of visitors, and narrow entry/exit points triggered a stampede-like situation. Police said the pandal has been closed to visitors. At least 17 people died (including 13 women and one child) and over 35 others were injured; they were rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
West Bengal authorities, including the state Chief Minister, visited the hospital to take stock of the situation. A toll-free helpline has been activated. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed distress over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in the city.
