In a landmark example of swift justice under India’s new criminal laws, the Sambalpur SDJM Court convicted Rajanikant Bhainsal alias Monu in a temple idol theft case within just 28 days.
The court sentenced him to two years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1,000 under sections 331(3) and 305(D) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The case began on February 17, 2026, when Lokanath Panda, trustee of Somnath Baba Temple in Balibandh, lodged a complaint about the theft of a brass Ganesh idol weighing around two kilograms. Acting swiftly, Sambalpur police arrested the accused on February 20 and recovered the stolen idol. By February 27, the police had already filed the chargesheet.
The rapid investigation and trial highlight the effectiveness of India’s newly implemented legal framework, which emphasises speedy justice and higher conviction rates. Officials noted that the case demonstrates how prompt police action and judicial efficiency can restore public confidence in law enforcement.
State Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania congratulated the Sambalpur SP and the investigating officers for their dedication. He praised the team for completing the investigation, filing the chargesheet, and securing a conviction in record time.
