World number one Aryna Sabalenka stormed into the Indian Wells quarter-finals on Tuesday, defeating former champion Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4 in a battle of Grand Slam winners.
Sabalenka produced another commanding straight-sets performance, firing 31 winners and eight aces. She mixed her trademark groundstrokes with timely net approaches, keeping Osaka under pressure throughout. “I’m happy that I put so much pressure on her and brought variety today,” Sabalenka said after the match.
The Belarusian wrapped up the first set with two breaks of serve. Osaka found rhythm in the second but failed to crack Sabalenka’s serve. Sabalenka saved both break points she faced and sealed the decisive break at 4-3 with a pair of forehand winners.
This was only their second career meeting. Osaka won their first clash in 2018 en route to her maiden US Open title. Sabalenka noted the rarity of their encounters but predicted more battles ahead as Osaka regains form after returning to the tour in 2025 following maternity leave.
Sabalenka, runner-up at Indian Wells in 2023 and 2025, now pursues her first title at the prestigious Masters 1000 event. She will face either Amanda Anisimova or Victoria Mboko in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Australian qualifier Talia Gibson continued her dream run, upsetting seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to reach her first WTA quarter-final. Gibson struck 42 winners and will next meet either Linda Noskova or Alexandra Eala.
