The Odisha government has launched the Balabhadra Organic Farming Mission from the 2025-26 financial year to promote sustainable agriculture across the state.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, replying on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo in the Assembly, said the mission will run for five years until 2029-30. It aims to bring 90,670 hectares of farmland under organic cultivation across 11 districts.
The minister informed that under the mission’s “Amrut Anna” component, chemical-free aromatic rice and pulses will be supplied to the Jagannath Temple Administration for use in Mahaprasad and other rituals. He said this initiative will enrich and honor Jagannath culture.
Currently, Odisha has 16,870 hectares under organic farming, including 270 hectares dedicated to Amrut Anna crops. The mission will expand awareness programs, skill development, and training for farmers on bio-input production and usage. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) incentives will also be provided to encourage the adoption of organic practices.
The government plans to ensure certification of organic produce, boost farmer incomes through primary processing, value addition, and establish strong market linkages for organic products.
Officials emphasised that the mission will not only strengthen food security but also enhance Odisha’s cultural and agricultural heritage.
