In a contest that lived up to its billing as a high-scoring blockbuster, Rajasthan Royals handed Punjab Kings their first defeat of IPL 2026, chasing down 223 with four balls to spare in a commanding six-wicket victory.
Punjab Kings came out swinging, led by Priyansh Arya’s explosive cameo. The young opener blazed away at a strike rate of 263 before Jofra Archer’s raw pace brought his innings to a dramatic close. Prabhsimran Singh then steadied the ship, forming a solid partnership with Connolly. However, debutant leg-spinner Yash Raj Punja struck twice in the middle overs to apply the brakes.
Just as PBKS appeared to be losing momentum, Marcus Stoinis unleashed a blistering unbeaten 62 off just 22 balls, powering the Kings to a formidable total of 222. It was a total that looked more than enough on most days.
But Rajasthan Royals matched fire with fire from the very first over. “Boss Baby” Vaibhav Sooryavanshi launched the chase with a whirlwind 43 off 16 balls, setting an aggressive tone before Arshdeep Singh halted his charge. Yashasvi Jaiswal kept the momentum alive with a fluent 51 off 27, ensuring RR stayed ahead of the asking rate.
Punjab Kings fought back through Harpreet Brar’s disciplined lines and Yuzvendra Chahal’s trademark breakthroughs in the middle overs. Yet, the Royals’ finishers had the final say. Donovan Ferreira, named Player of the Match, combined with impact substitute Shubham Dubey to dominate the death overs, sealing the chase with authority in 19.2 overs.
Iyer’s Take
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer reflected on the loss:
“A total of 224 was an outstanding effort, especially on a tricky pitch. Our batting was exceptional, but the bowling didn’t quite deliver. Execution is key in this format. Runs against the spinners were hard to come by, and full credit to Harpreet Brar for the way he bowled. It’s our first defeat — we’ll learn quickly and move on.”
The win lifts the Rajasthan Royals to six victories for the season and deals a significant blow to the Punjab Kings’ momentum. With both teams packed with firepower, this high-voltage encounter has set the stage for more thrills as the IPL 2026 season intensifies.
