Republic Day Airspace Closure to Disrupt Delhi Airport Operations for 6 Days, Over 600 Flights Likely to Be Affected

As winter fog continues to disrupt air travel, passengers flying in and out of Delhi are set to face additional challenges due to the temporary closure of Delhi’s airspace ahead of Republic Day 2026. The closure, announced through a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), will remain in effect for six days from January 21 to January 26, significantly impacting flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

According to the NOTAM issued on Tuesday, Delhi airspace will remain closed daily from 10:20 AM to 12:45 PM, a total of 145 minutes each day. The restriction has been imposed to facilitate Republic Day parade rehearsals, dress rehearsal, and the main ceremonial flypast along Kartavya Path.

Over 600 Flights Expected to Be Impacted

Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium indicates that more than 600 flights could be affected during the closure window. This period is among the busiest for Delhi Airport, with a high volume of domestic arrivals connecting to international departures to Europe and other destinations, as well as onward domestic flights.

As a result, thousands of passengers are likely to experience delays, rescheduling, missed connections, or cancellations over the six-day period.

Why the Airspace Closure Is Necessary

Complete airspace restrictions are enforced every year as part of Republic Day security protocols. These measures ensure the safety of aircraft participating in the flypast and the protection of dignitaries attending the celebrations.

While not all affected flights will be cancelled, most are expected to undergo schedule changes. Airlines may also accommodate passengers on alternative flights or offer refunds, depending on operational feasibility.

However, the situation could become more complex if dense fog conditions coincide with the restricted operating window, potentially leading to congestion and operational strain.

Airlines Face Operational Challenges

The NOTAM was issued with just eight days’ notice, leaving airlines limited time to adjust schedules, reassign aircraft, manage crew rotations, and handle passenger rebookings. With major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai already operating near full capacity, options to retime flights are constrained.

Airlines will need to issue IRROPS (Irregular Operations) notifications, reroute passengers, and coordinate with airports nationwide. The ripple effect is expected to be felt even at airports not directly connected to Delhi, as aircraft rotations are interlinked.

What Passengers Should Do

Passengers travelling through Delhi between January 21 and 26, especially during the closure window, are advised to:

  • Ensure contact details are updated in airline bookings

  • Monitor airline notifications and flight status regularly

  • Consider flexible travel options where possible

In case of cancellations, airlines typically offer alternative flights or full refunds. However, last-minute rebooking may come at a higher fare, making airline-provided alternatives a more practical choice.

Calls for Earlier Announcements

As the government aims to position Delhi as a major international transit hub, aviation experts suggest that such airspace closure announcements could be made well in advance. Republic Day falls on the same date every year, and predictable scheduling could help airlines and passengers plan better, reducing disruption and safeguarding confidence in Delhi’s hub operations.
