The Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s premier cultural body under the Ministry of Culture, has added two iconic festivals of Odisha—Ratha Jatra and Bali Jatra—to the “National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.”

This recognition highlights Odisha’s rich cultural tapestry and celebrates the significance of these age-old traditions.

Ratha Jatra, the renowned chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, attracts devotees from across the globe to Puri, showcasing Odisha’s spirituality and devotion. Bali Jatra, a vibrant fair that commemorates the ancient maritime trade of the Kalinga empire, pays homage to Odisha’s entrepreneurial spirit and historical connections. Both events bring communities together and preserve the state’s heritage.

With this recognition, Odisha’s festivals take a proud place on the national stage, emphasizing their cultural and historical importance. The inventory also serves as a step toward safeguarding these traditions for future generations.
