President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu unveiled and flagged off the trophies of the Durand Cup Tournament 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on July 7.
She congratulated past and present officials and players, noting that the tournament has nurtured countless football talents.
The President highlighted the inclusion of new teams this year, including a team from Sri Lanka, competing for the Durand Cup, the President’s Cup, and the Shimla Trophy. She expressed confidence that the expanded participation will enhance the popularity of this historic competition.
She emphasised football’s global appeal, describing it as a sport that embodies excellence, unity, and sportsmanship. Referring to the ongoing FIFA World Cup, she said the world’s best teams inspire fans everywhere and elevate the prestige of football internationally.
The President acknowledged India’s long journey ahead in establishing a global football presence. She expressed hope that the Durand Cup would play a vital role in nurturing young talent and strengthening India’s football ecosystem.
She also underlined the broader significance of sporting spirit, which teaches equality, cooperation, and resilience. Linking sportsmanship to national progress, she said India is moving towards becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047, and unity will be key to achieving this goal.
