In a dramatic political shift, 13 councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have resigned, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and direction.
Led by former Leader of the House in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Mukesh Goel, the defectors have announced the creation of a new political outfit—the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
Goel, a seasoned politician with 25 years of experience as a municipal councillor, had previously switched from Congress to AAP in 2021. His recent electoral defeat in the Adarsh Nagar Assembly constituency, combined with internal discord within AAP after its poor performance in the Assembly elections earlier this year, appears to have fueled this departure.
Political analysts suggest that this latest split could further weaken AAP’s hold in Delhi, especially after its significant electoral setback against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As the Indraprastha Vikas Party takes shape, it remains to be seen whether it can pose a credible challenge in the capital’s political landscape.
