Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Parliament to roll out the Women’s Empowerment Act by 2029, calling it a defining step in India’s democratic journey.
Speaking at the Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan in Delhi, the Prime Minister said the upcoming Parliament session from April 16 will hold detailed discussions on the women’s reservation law. He described the initiative as a landmark decision dedicated to “Nari Shakti” and stressed the need for consensus across political parties.
Modi reminded the audience that the demand for women’s reservation has been pending for nearly four decades. He said the time has come to end decades of waiting and ensure greater representation of women in legislatures.
The Prime Minister highlighted the growing role of women in governance. He pointed to their presence in grassroots institutions, constitutional offices, and local bodies. More than 1.4 million women currently serve in Panchayats, with participation nearing 50 per cent in 21 states.
He emphasised that women have shaped India’s history, from the freedom struggle to the Constituent Assembly. He said their leadership continues to transform governance and strengthen democracy.
The government expects the Women’s Empowerment Act to accelerate social justice and create an egalitarian framework. Modi said the law will elevate the dignity of Parliament and fulfil the aspirations of millions of women across India.
The special session will focus on operationalising the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, with the 2029 deadline as the target for implementation.
