Oxford Law Student Viraansh Bhanushali Goes Viral for Strongly Worded Speech on India-Pakistan Policy

A speech delivered by Viraansh Bhanushali, an Indian law student at the University of Oxford, has sparked widespread discussion online after clips from a recent Oxford Union debate went viral on social media.

Bhanushali, who hails from Mumbai, spoke during a debate on the motion: “This House Believes That India’s Policy Towards Pakistan Is a Populist Disguise for Security Policy.” Arguing against the motion, he maintained that India’s approach toward Pakistan is shaped by genuine national security concerns rather than political populism.

Videos of the speech have garnered millions of views, propelling the Oxford student into the spotlight overnight.

What Was the Debate About?

The debate took place at the Oxford Union, one of the world’s most prominent student-run debating societies, founded in 1823. Participants discussed whether India’s Pakistan policy is driven more by domestic political considerations than by strategic security needs.

Bhanushali countered the motion by arguing that India’s responses to security threats have historically shown restraint and strategic calculation, rather than alignment with electoral timelines.

Key Points From the Speech

Responding to arguments made by Moosa Harraj, president of the Oxford Union, Bhanushali stated that major security incidents and India’s responses to them do not coincide with election cycles, challenging the idea that such actions are driven by vote-based politics.

Drawing from his personal experience growing up in Mumbai, he highlighted the long-term impact of terrorism on civilians and communities. In one widely shared moment from the debate, he argued that countries accused of sheltering extremist elements lack moral standing to lecture others, using the line, “You cannot shame a state that has no shame,” which quickly became a focal point of online discussion.

Who Is Viraansh Bhanushali?

Viraansh Bhanushali is a law student at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford, pursuing a BA in Jurisprudence (LLB), English Law with Law Studies in Europe. He previously studied at NES International School in Mumbai before moving to the UK for higher education.

A member of Oxford’s 2026 graduating batch, Bhanushali has been actively involved in student leadership and debate. He currently serves as Chief of Staff of the Oxford Union, and has previously held roles such as International Officer and member of the Secretary’s Committee.

He is also the co-founder of The Oxford Majlis, a student-led initiative focused on cultural, intellectual, and policy discussions.
