A fresh controversy erupted in Odisha after a saree featuring Lord Jagannath’s image appeared in online advertisements.
The saree, priced at Rs 749, displayed Mahaprabhu’s image along with depictions of the three chariots and deities on its border.
The saree was promoted by Sonai Store through photos and videos on social media platforms. The advertisement triggered outrage among devotees, Jagannath lovers, and servitors, who condemned the use of the revered deity’s image on apparel.
Critics argued that placing Lord Jagannath’s image on clothing amounted to disrespect. They demanded the immediate removal of the deity’s image from the saree and urged the Shree Jagannath Temple administration to take strict action against such practices.
The incident sparked widespread debate on social media, with many calling it a violation of cultural and religious sentiments. Devotees emphasised that Jagannath holds sacred significance for millions of Odias and should not be commercialised in this manner.
This controversy adds to a series of concerns raised in recent years over the inappropriate use of Jagannath’s image in promotional and commercial products. Religious leaders and servitors reiterated that the sanctity of the deity must be preserved at all costs.
