Oman captain Jatinder Singh has set the tone ahead of his side’s final Group B encounter against Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, saying it is the perfect opportunity “to crush” the struggling cricket powerhouse.
The two teams will meet at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday, marking the end of the group stage. While both sides are already out of contention for the Super 8s, the fixture carries pride and momentum value.
Australia’s Shock Early Exit
Led by Mitchell Marsh, Australia endured a disappointing campaign. Injury setbacks to key pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood disrupted their preparations, and consecutive defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka sealed their fate.
The 2021 champions have now failed to reach the semi-finals for the third consecutive edition. This also marks only the second time Australia have exited at the group stage, the first being in 2009.
‘Best Time to Crush Them’: Jatinder Singh
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jatinder expressed confidence despite Oman’s winless campaign so far.
“100%, it is an opportunity. Our boys are looking forward to it. T20 is a game of momentum and moments. If you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day. Australia is not doing well at the moment. It is the best time to crush them,” he said.
Oman have suffered defeats against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Ireland but remain optimistic about ending their tournament on a high note.
“Well, to be precise, they are also out of the tournament. The boys are really positive. We tried to play better cricket, but things didn’t go our way. We want to make a mark,” he added.
Australia Respond to Criticism
Australia’s early exit has triggered criticism from former players, with some questioning whether the team prioritised other formats over T20 cricket.
However, head coach Andrew McDonald dismissed such claims.
“We’ve been fully locked into this for a period of time. This is one of our priorities. To say we’re prioritising other formats over the T20 World Cup is entirely false,” McDonald stated.
He acknowledged the challenges of managing workloads across formats but maintained that the team remains committed to excelling in all competitions.
What’s at Stake?
While qualification is no longer possible, the match presents an opportunity for both teams to restore pride and finish their campaigns positively. For Australia, it is about salvaging respect. For Oman, it is about creating a memorable moment against a cricketing giant.
