An oil tanker and a cargo ship collided in the North Sea on Monday, triggering a massive blaze and resulting in injuries to 32 individuals.
The UK Coastguard has been coordinating a large-scale rescue operation. The injured were brought ashore for treatment in three vessels, with ambulances queueing at the quay for immediate medical assistance.
Martyn Boyers, Grimsby port director, confirmed the scale of the rescue efforts, noting that the Coastguard’s counter-pollution team is also assessing the situation. The RNLI reported fires on both ships and mentioned that several people had abandoned the vessels.
Images broadcast on UK television revealed a huge plume of thick, black smoke rising from the scene, approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) off the coast of East Yorkshire.
The International Maritime Organization’s spokesperson highlighted that firefighting and search-and-rescue operations remain the top priority.
