Bhubaneswar: In a proactive move to enhance disaster preparedness, the Odisha government has initiated a special training program for Self-Help Group (SHG) members across 14 cyclone-prone districts.
This initiative, a collaboration between Mission Shakti and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), aims to bolster community resilience against natural disasters.
The training will cover essential disaster management skills, including rescue operations, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
Over the next year, approximately 1.81 lakh women from 3922 panchayats will participate in this program. Each panchayat will train at least 50 SHG members, equipping them to effectively respond to and recover from cyclones and other natural calamities.
Sumitra Patnaik, Additional Secretary of Mission Shakti, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Women play a crucial role in disaster risk reduction and mitigation. By empowering them with the necessary skills, we can significantly reduce casualties and ensure quicker recovery during disasters.”
