Odisha Police achieved a major breakthrough in its crackdown on illegal narcotics by seizing 1,091 kilograms of ganja and 240 bottles of cough syrup in four separate cases across Sonepur district.
Superintendent of Police Narayan Nayak shared details during a press briefing.
In the first case, police intercepted a 14-wheeler truck (JHA10BP 3454) near Budha Raja Chhak in Sonepur and recovered 1,067 packets containing 10 quintals and 5 kilograms of ganja. Officers arrested two men from Bihar’s Bhaskar district, identified as Laxman Yadav (29) and Laxman Yadav (59). The consignment originated from Boudh district and was headed toward Sambalpur.
In another case at Birmaharajpur, police seized 37 kilograms and 450 grams of ganja being transported on two motorcycles. Three men — Rajesh Setha (23), Venkates Mahakud (26), and Jitendra Sethi (24) — were arrested.
At Binika, police recovered 3 kilograms and 720 grams of ganja and arrested Abhimanyu Budey. In a separate raid in the same area, officers seized 240 bottles of illegal cough syrup and confiscated a car (OR-15F-0032). Police arrested Narendra Dash (30), Hemant Bastia (31), and Dhirendra Behera (22) in connection with the case.
SP Nayak confirmed that nine accused were arrested across the four cases. He said police remain committed to intensifying operations against illegal drug trafficking in the district.
