Odisha Jails Are Having 20,260 Prisoners: Minister

Bhubaneswar: Minister of State for Home Tusharkanti Behera on Monday informed the house that as many as 20,260 prisoners are currently lodged in jails across Odisha.

In response to a question from BJD MLA Umakanta Samantray in the Odisha Assembly, Behera said a total of 16,876 under-trail male prisoners and 623 female prisoners are lodged in various jails across the state.

“Similarly, 11 male prisoners are waiting for capital punishment and 1543 jail inmates are serving life imprisonment. A total of 39 jails are overcrowded,” Behera added.
