Odisha Heatwave Relief Incoming: Low Pressure Brewing in Bay of Bengal from July 2

Monsoon winds activate across the state bringing cloudy skies, reduced temperatures, and thunderstorms today; below-normal rain expected till July 1 followed by normal to above-normal showers next week

After weeks of blistering heat, the people of Odisha finally have something to cheer about. The southwest monsoon winds are turning active across the state, bringing long-awaited relief from the scorching temperatures in the next one to two days.


Weather scientist Sarat Chandra Sahu said the next two days will see mostly cloudy skies, which will help bring down the mercury levels significantly. On Saturday afternoon, several parts of coastal and interior districts already experienced thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall, offering a welcome preview of the changing weather.“ Relief from the heat will continue till July 5-6. However, humidity will remain high due to increased moisture in the atmosphere,” Sahu added.

Looking ahead, a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around July 2. There is also a possibility of a cyclonic circulation developing in the northwest Bay of Bengal by June 30, which may intensify further.

According to the forecast, rainfall across Odisha is expected to remain below normal until July 1. From July 2 to July 8, however, the state is likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. This outlook is in line with the extended weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The activation of the monsoon and the likely formation of the low pressure system mark the beginning of a more active rainy season, which is expected to bring much-needed respite for both people and agriculture in the coming days.
