Kalinga Stadium erupted with energy and applause as the State-Level Children’s Sports Festival, ‘UTSAHA-2026’, officially commenced, hosting over 700 passionate young athletes representing Child Care Institutions (CCIs) from all 30 districts of Odisha.

Organised by the Odisha State Child Protection Society (OSCPS) under the aegis of the Department of Women and Child Development, the flagship two-day festival aims to provide vulnerable children with an equal platform to excel, build confidence, and display their athletic abilities.

A Vibrant Grand Opening

The event was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who symbolically released a cluster of colourful balloons into the sky to mark the festival’s opening.

Addressing the audience, Smt. Parida commended Odisha’s expanding sports ecosystem and underscored the vital role physical activities play in childhood growth.

“Every child has the fundamental right to play, dream, and move forward with confidence. The State Government remains resolutely committed to ensuring these rights and providing equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their background,” stated Smt. Pravati Parida.

Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and Drinking Water, Rabi Narayan Naik, also attended the event as a guest of honour. He commended the department’s efforts in creating an inclusive platform, highlighting the essential role of grassroots institutions in discovering hidden talent in remote areas.

March-Past, Athletics, and Camaraderie

The ceremony began with a disciplined march-past by district-level winners. The two-day festival features a diverse mix of competitive track and field events alongside indoor and outdoor games, including:

  • Track & Field: 100-metre sprint, 200-metre sprint, long jump, and relay races

  • Team Sports: Football

  • Indoor Games: Chess and Carrom

In addition to competitive events, friendly matches and recreational activities are scheduled throughout the venue to foster team spirit, physical well-being, and social interaction among participants.

Dedicated Leadership Driving Holistic Care

Welcoming the dignitaries and participants, Dr Mrunalini Darswal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Development, emphasised the need to blend protection, creativity, and fitness into everyday child welfare efforts.

The opening program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Monisha Banerjee, Director of the Department of Women and Child Development and OSCPS, who expressed gratitude to district officials, coaches, and staff for organising the event. Sumitra Kumari Patnaik, Additional Secretary, along with other senior department officials, were also present to support the young contenders.

  • A customer at Regal Food Park in Infocity, Patia, allegedly found insects in the cauliflower served in a vegetable curry. When the customer raised the issue, the restaurant representative reportedly responded dismissively, asking how they could be expected to spot insects inside a cauliflower and stating that nothing could be done.
Despite the complaint, the customer and his friends were required to pay the entire bill. The incident raises serious concerns about food hygiene and the restaurant’s handling of customer complaints.
