The Odisha Legislative Assembly will convene a special session on April 30 to deliberate on the role of women in Indian democracy.

According to an official notification issued by the Assembly Secretary, all members of the House have been informed about the upcoming session, which will focus on enhancing women’s participation and representation in democratic institutions.

Focus on Women’s Participation in Democracy

The special session is expected to provide a platform for meaningful discussions on the contributions, challenges, and opportunities for women in governance and policymaking. Lawmakers are likely to exchange views on strengthening inclusive political participation and ensuring equitable representation.

Opposition Raises Delimitation Concerns

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik had earlier called for a special Assembly session on April 15 to discuss Odisha’s representation concerns linked to the proposed delimitation exercise. In a detailed letter addressed to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, he raised apprehensions over the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026. Patnaik cautioned that while Odisha may gain additional Lok Sabha seats, its overall share in Parliament could decline, potentially weakening the state’s voice at the national level.

Context: National Debate on Women’s Representation

The development comes at a time when the issue of women’s political participation has gained national attention, particularly following the debate surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.

The proposed legislation aimed to reserve seats for women in legislative bodies, sparking widespread discussions on gender equality in politics.

Significance of the Special Session

The Odisha Assembly’s initiative reflects a growing emphasis on inclusive governance and gender-sensitive policymaking. The session is expected to contribute to broader efforts aimed at empowering women and strengthening their role in democratic processes across the country.
