A 14-year-old girl went missing on Saturday night after allegedly jumping into the Mahanadi River from the Chaunrpur Bridge, sparking an urgent rescue operation.
According to police, the girl, a resident of Mayabagicha area, made a phone call to a neighbouring girl around 10 pm, informing her that she was about to jump into the river. Alarmed by the call, locals and authorities rushed to the spot. Fire Services personnel launched a search operation, but strong currents and darkness hampered efforts. No trace of the girl was found till the latest reports.
Investigations revealed that the girl had earlier argued with her male friend. She reportedly told her family she was going to a neighbour’s house before leaving home. Later, she is believed to have met the boy at the bridge, where another argument broke out.
Police said the girl jumped into the river in the presence of the boy. The male friend has been detained for questioning, while the neighbour who received the call has also been questioned.
Locals expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the need for greater awareness and vigilance among teenagers. Rescue teams continued their search on Sunday morning, deploying boats and divers to comb the river.
Authorities assured that all efforts are being made to trace the missing girl. The incident has raised concerns about adolescent mental health and the importance of timely intervention in cases of distress.
