A devastating fire broke out at Bhubaneswar’s Market Building early Tuesday morning, destroying more than 15 garment shops and causing losses worth crores of rupees.
The blaze erupted near the BMC multi-level parking area around 6:30 a.m. Thick smoke was seen billowing from several shops as firefighters rushed to the scene. Multiple fire service teams battled the flames with five fire tenders and over 30 personnel engaged in the operation.
Despite heavy rain in the city, the fire spread rapidly, making it difficult for firefighters to control. Officials said the blaze was eventually brought under control, and a detailed assessment of damages is underway.
Assistant Fire Officer Manoranjan Raut confirmed that the fire control room received a call at 6:56 a.m. Two teams were dispatched immediately, followed by two more units after assessing the situation. He said the fire likely started due to an electrical short circuit.
Shopkeepers reported massive losses, estimating damages at over ₹2.5 crore. They expressed relief that timely intervention by the fire service prevented further destruction. Traders said they would approach the BMC Mayor to demand compensation.
Police cordoned off the area for safety, while officials from the fire department and BMC monitored the situation. No casualties have been reported.
