Setting aside two decades of historic rivalry, Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo shared a heartfelt message for Lionel Messi following the Argentine captain’s emotional farewell from international football.
The tribute came after Messi played his final match for La Albiceleste at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on October 6, capping off a glorious 21-year international career with a 3-0 victory over Benin.
”A Story That Will Last Forever”
Responding directly to an emotional Instagram post where Messi reflected on his journey with the national team, the 41-year-old Ronaldo acknowledged the legacy and profound impact of their shared era at the pinnacle of world football.
”Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will last forever. All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.
Ronaldo’s gracious words joined a global wave of tributes from football legends including Neymar and Ronaldinho, highlighting mutual respect despite years of intense competition at both club and international levels.
A Picture-Perfect International Exit
Messi’s final appearance in front of 85,000 cheering fans in Buenos Aires was his 208th cap for Argentina. The 39-year-old playmaker delivered a masterclass performance, orchestrating all three goals with a penalty strike and two assists.
Over his historic career with Argentina, Messi amassed 136 goals, leading his nation to four major international trophies:
- 2022 FIFA World Cup (Qatar)
- 2021 & 2024 Copa América titles
- 2022 Finalissima
Reflecting on his decision, Messi posted: “Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white. I know I’m making the right decision… It’s been an incredible journey, full of joy and also some sadness, but I know for sure that every step I took was worth it.”
While Messi has drawn the curtain on his international career, he will continue playing club football for MLS side Inter Miami.
