According to police sources, Karmi Murmu and Mushu Murmu of Mehulia village under Khunta police station had their second child, a baby girl, nine months ago. While the first child was a girl, the second child was also a girl.

After the birth of the second child, Mushu Murmu moved to Tamil Nadu to earn money to support the family. However, Mushu returned home a few days ago he found out that her 8-month-old daughter was missing.

When he asked his wife asked about the baby girl, she revealed that the child had died. After growing suspicious, Mushu asked the neighbours and his relatives and found out that his wife had sold the baby girl to a couple in Bipracharanpur area of Khunta police station for only Rs 800.

After Mushu lodged a complaint about the incident at Khunta police station, the police registered a case (178/23) and rescued the baby from the couple, Phulmani Marandi and Okil Tudu of Bipracharanpur village, who had bought the baby.

Along with this, the police also arrested Mahi Murmu, a woman who mediated the selling of the girl child. And after rescuing the baby girl, the police handed her over to her father Mushu Murmu.

The police further revealed that the mother of the baby girl, the middleman and the couple, who bought the girl, have been arrested and forwarded to the court.

On the other hand, Phulmani, who bought the baby girl, said that she did not have any children and when she knew that the woman was selling her child, she decided to go for it.

Even though public awareness has been created at various government and official levels for the protection of the girl child, the incident of selling such a girl child has become a matter of grave concern.
