Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for an exciting festive season with the launch of its latest mid-size SUV, the Escudo.

Codenamed Y17, this vehicle aims to bridge the gap between the popular sub-4 metre SUV Brezza and the Grand Vitara. Targeting a fiercely competitive segment, the Escudo will take on industry giants like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Built on Suzuki’s Global-C platform, the Escudo is expected to feature a longer wheelbase and a more spacious boot, making it an attractive choice for families. With an expected length of over 4,345 mm, this 5-seater SUV promises a blend of style and practicality. Its design will incorporate familiar elements from the Grand Vitara while maintaining Maruti Suzuki’s distinct visual identity.

The SUV will retain Grand Vitara’s powertrain options, offering a variety of choices for consumers. The base model is likely to feature a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 104bhp, with a CNG option producing 88bhp. Additionally, a hybrid variant delivering 116bhp is in the works, focusing on improved fuel efficiency.

With a strategic decision to sell Escudo through its Arena dealerships, Maruti Suzuki aims to attract a wider audience. Currently, the only SUV sold through Arena is the Brezza, making Escudo a much-needed addition to the lineup.

The anticipated launch of the Escudo coincides with Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, the e-Vitara, which is set to debut in September 2025. By introducing both conventional and electric SUVs, the company is positioning itself for dominance in an evolving automotive landscape.
