N Chandrasekaran has reportedly been reappointed as executive chairman of Tata Sons for another five-year term, reversing his decision last month not to seek reappointment. The development was reported by Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The reasons behind the change were not immediately clear. Tata Sons had not issued an official statement at the time of the report, and the development could not be independently verified.

Chandrasekaran’s current term is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027.

Tata Sons Board Meeting

The Tata Sons board met on Thursday for the first time since Chandrasekaran announced that he would not offer himself for another term.

The meeting came amid discussions over the future of Tata Sons, including its proposed stock market listing and the tenure of its executive chairman.

The meeting was also held less than a week after the Reserve Bank of India directed Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, to list on the stock market.

Noel Tata Opposed Reappointment

According to reports, Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, opposed the proposal to reappoint Chandrasekaran.

Tata Trusts and affiliated trusts together control around 66% of Tata Sons, according to the reports. Reuters and PTI later reported that Noel Tata voted against Chandrasekaran’s reappointment, but the resolution was approved by a majority of the board.

Earlier, a spokesperson for Sir Dorabji Tata Trust had reiterated that the Trust had respected Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek another term and wanted the process for appointing a new chairman to begin.

Chandrasekaran Had Announced Exit

Chandrasekaran announced in August that he would not seek reappointment when his term ended in February 2027.

At the time, he said he had completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the organisation.

His reported reappointment now marks a reversal of that earlier decision.

Tata Sons Leadership

Chandrasekaran has served as executive chairman of Tata Sons since 2017. His continuation for another five-year term, if formally confirmed by the company, would extend his leadership of the Tata Group’s holding company beyond February 2027.

An official announcement from Tata Sons is awaited.
