US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday for a crucial four-day diplomatic visit focused on strengthening India-US strategic ties, expanding defence cooperation, boosting trade relations and addressing growing concerns over global energy security amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.
Rubio landed in Kolkata before heading to New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The visit comes at a significant geopolitical moment as India and the United States look to deepen cooperation under the Quad alliance while also navigating global economic and security challenges.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor welcomed Rubio upon arrival and described the visit as an opportunity to push forward an “ambitious agenda” between the two countries.
A major highlight of the trip will be Rubio’s participation in the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26. The Quad, which includes India, the United States, Japan and Australia, is expected to discuss Indo-Pacific security, supply-chain resilience, emerging technologies and growing concerns over China’s expanding regional influence.
Trade and energy security are also expected to dominate discussions during the visit. India is currently dealing with the impact of rising global crude oil prices and supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials from both countries are likely to explore ways to strengthen cooperation in LNG supplies, renewable energy, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.
Defence cooperation is expected to remain another key focus area. India and the United States have significantly expanded military and strategic ties over the last decade, with India operating several advanced American defence platforms including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B drones and C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft.
Beyond defence purchases, both sides are expected to discuss co-production of military systems and collaboration in next-generation technologies and space programmes.
Before arriving in New Delhi, Rubio visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, founded by Mother Teresa. He is also expected to visit Agra and Jaipur during his India tour.
The visit comes amid renewed efforts by both countries to stabilise trade ties after recent disagreements over tariffs and sanctions. Diplomatic observers believe Rubio’s India trip signals Washington’s continued focus on India as a major strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
With global tensions rising and economic uncertainty growing, the outcomes of Rubio’s India visit are expected to play an important role in shaping the future direction of India-US relations.
