The Odisha government has initiated strict action against 79 Block Education Officers (BEOs) for allegedly delaying the processing of elementary teachers’ transfer applications across multiple districts.
The Directorate of Elementary Education issued show-cause notices to the officers after they reportedly failed to forward online transfer applications to the respective District Education Officers (DEOs) within the prescribed deadline.
According to official sources, May 10, 2026, was fixed as the final date for forwarding transfer applications submitted by elementary school teachers through the online portal. Despite repeated reminders and instructions from the department, several BEOs allegedly did not complete the process on time, resulting in administrative delays.
The Directorate described the lapse as “gross administrative indiscipline” and asked the concerned officers to submit written explanations within three days. Authorities also warned that disciplinary proceedings and other administrative measures could follow if the responses are found unsatisfactory.
The BEOs who received notices belong to districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balangir, Nayagarh, Khurda and Rayagada.
Sources within the department revealed that a significant number of teacher transfer applications remain pending in several blocks, especially in Ganjam, Gajapati and Kendrapara districts. The delay has reportedly created anxiety among teachers waiting for transfers ahead of the new academic session.
The annual teacher transfer process plays a key role in balancing staff distribution across government schools in Odisha. Delays in forwarding applications could impact postings, school functioning and teacher availability in different regions.
The development comes at a time when the Odisha government has been stressing accountability and administrative efficiency in the education sector. Recently, the state government also issued warnings to universities and educational institutions over irregularities in appointments and administrative procedures.
Officials said the Directorate is closely monitoring the transfer process and further action will be taken based on the explanations submitted by the officers concerned.
