Odisha continued to reel under intense summer conditions on Friday as rising temperatures combined with high humidity levels pushed the heat index sharply higher across several districts.
The oppressive weather has increased discomfort for residents, especially in western and coastal parts of the state, where both dry heat and moisture-laden winds are creating dangerous “feels-like” temperatures.
According to meteorological observations, hot and dry winds from central and north-western India have been continuously entering Odisha, contributing to the ongoing heatwave conditions.
Jharsuguda Records Highest Temperature in Odisha
Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature in the state as western Odisha continued to experience severe daytime heat.
Weather experts said the persistent flow of dry continental winds has caused temperatures to remain exceptionally high across districts in western Odisha.
The impact has been worsened by the rising heat index — a measure of how hot conditions actually feel when humidity is factored in alongside air temperature.
Meteorologists warned that the combination of extreme heat and moisture is making outdoor conditions increasingly hazardous, especially during afternoon hours.
Coastal Odisha Faces Hot and Humid Conditions
While western Odisha is battling dry heat, coastal districts including Bhubaneswar and nearby regions are facing intense humidity due to easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal.
These moisture-laden winds have significantly increased atmospheric water vapour levels, creating sticky and uncomfortable weather conditions along the coast.
Residents are experiencing:
- Excessive sweating
- Warm nights
- Reduced cooling even during early morning hours
- Increased risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion
The humidity has made temperatures feel several degrees hotter than the actual recorded values.
IMD Forecast: No Immediate Relief for Odisha
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar weather conditions to continue across Odisha over the next few days.
Authorities have warned that:
- Heatwave conditions may persist in western districts
- Hot and humid weather will continue in coastal regions
- Temperatures could remain above normal levels
- Heat index values may stay dangerously high
The weather office has also indicated the possibility of a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal towards the end of May, though immediate relief from humidity is unlikely.
Health Advisory Issued for Residents
With the heat index rising sharply, health officials have advised people to:
- Avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours
- Drink water frequently
- Wear light cotton clothing
- Avoid strenuous physical activity in direct sunlight
- Take extra care of elderly people and children
Doctors warned that prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity can lead to:
- Heatstroke
- Fatigue
- Dehydration
- Dizziness
- Heat cramps
Why Odisha Is Feeling Hotter Than Actual Temperature
Experts explained that Odisha’s rising heat index is being caused by a combination of:
- Dry hot winds entering from north-western India
- High daytime temperatures
- Increased moisture from Bay of Bengal winds
- Reduced cloud cover
This combination traps heat near the surface and limits the body’s natural cooling process through sweating.
