A brutal murder shocked Bhubaneswar’s Gadakana Om Sai Bihar area under Mancheswar police limits after a man allegedly killed his neighbour over suspicion of an illicit affair.
Police said the accused, Nilakantha Mohanty, 45, attacked and killed Sushil Kumar Singh, 55, with a knife late Friday night. After the murder, Nilakantha surrendered to the police. Investigators arrested him and produced him in court.
Both the accused and the victim lived in the same locality. Nilakantha suspected that his wife had an affair with Singh, who was a former apartment committee president. Family disputes had been ongoing for two months, leading to the separation between Nilakantha and his wife.
Reports indicated that Nilakantha feared losing his wife and planned the attack. Earlier, the woman had lodged a complaint at the Mahila police station, but no resolution followed. The tension escalated until Nilakantha carried out the crime.
Police confirmed that the accused stabbed Singh multiple times, resulting in his death. Officers conducted an investigation at the crime scene and took Nilakantha into custody.
Residents expressed concern over the rising number of murders in the capital city. They pointed to growing incidents linked to extramarital affairs, family disputes, and personal grudges. Citizens urged police to strengthen enforcement and ensure criminals fear the law.
Authorities noted that repeat offenders often return to crime even after serving jail terms, raising questions about deterrence and rehabilitation.
