Rayagada mob attack case

Police arrested five more individuals on Saturday in connection with the mob attack on a young woman from Delhi and her Gujarat-based colleague in Rayagada district.

With these arrests, the total number of accused now stands at 21.

Investigators said the arrests were based on CCTV footage, digital evidence, and videos collected from the scene. Earlier, 16 people had been arrested on Thursday.

The incident occurred on June 16 when two fellowship workers were attacked in the Kalyansinghpur area after false rumours spread that they were child lifters. The woman from Delhi was working on solid waste management projects in Kalahandi, while her colleague from Surat was engaged in turmeric packaging initiatives in Kandhamal.

The duo lost their way while travelling on a scooter and stopped near Kandulguda village to ask for directions. They interacted with locals and distributed chocolates to children celebrating the Raja festival. Rumours quickly spread, leading to a mob confrontation.

Despite showing identity documents, the volunteers faced suspicion and hostility. They attempted to flee but were surrounded, assaulted, and later caught near Dhamunipanga panchayat after their scooter skidded. Both sustained injuries before police rescued them.

Rayagada Superintendent of Police Raj Prasad confirmed that swift police action saved the victims. He said five more accused were arrested Saturday, adding to the 16 already in custody. Police registered four separate cases and continue efforts to identify all individuals involved.

The victims received treatment at the Kalyansinghpur Community Health Centre and later at the District Headquarters Hospital in Rayagada. Both have since been discharged.
