The controversial animated film Mahaprabhu Jagannath, originally scheduled for release on July 10, has been postponed following objections raised by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingh Deb.
In a key meeting of the Prachar and Prasar Committee held on Monday at the Srimandir administration office, the Gajapati himself chaired the proceedings and watched a screening of the film produced by Bhubaneswar-based M/s Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd.
After the screening and detailed discussions, the committee decided to defer the release until the content undergoes a thorough review and necessary corrections.
Speaking after the meeting, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb welcomed the idea of creating films on Lord Jagannath for children and the youth. However, he made it clear that such productions must stay true to tradition.
“Making a film on Mahaprabhu Jagannath for the younger generation is welcome, but it should not be based on imaginary or fabricated stories. The narrative shown in the film does not align with the sacred scriptures and our rich traditional heritage,” he stated firmly.
The film’s director reportedly acknowledged shortcomings during the meeting. As a result, the producers have been asked to re-examine the entire content and incorporate all required changes before the film can be released.
On the same occasion, the Gajapati also reiterated his strong opposition to ISKCON’s untimely Rath Yatra. He confirmed that letters had already been sent two days earlier to the new GVC Chairman of ISKCON, the Prime Minister, and the President of India. He announced that after Niladri Bije, a delegation would meet the concerned authorities to seek the Central Government’s intervention to stop such untimely processions.

The meeting was attended by Srimandir Chief Administrator Dr Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Puri District Collector Dibyajyoti Parida, eminent researchers, Mathadhis of various Maths, and members of the Srimandir Managing Committee.
The decision reflects the deep commitment in Puri to protect the sanctity and authenticity of Lord Jagannath’s legacy while encouraging meaningful cultural content for the next generation.
