Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable FIFA World Cup journey came to an emotional end after Portugal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The 41-year-old football icon, who had already confirmed this would be his final World Cup appearance, was visibly emotional after the final whistle. As Spain celebrated qualification for the quarterfinals, Ronaldo struggled to hold back tears while teammates gathered around to console him in an unforgettable farewell moment.

Spain Knock Portugal Out of FIFA World Cup 2026

Portugal’s hopes of reaching consecutive World Cup quarterfinals ended when substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner for Spain.

The victory not only sent Spain into the last eight but also extended its historic defensive record at the tournament.

Spain will now face Belgium in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals after the Belgians defeated the United States 4-1.

Ronaldo Reflects on His Final World Cup

Speaking after the heartbreaking defeat, Ronaldo admitted the result was painful but said he leaves with a clear conscience.

“I am sad to leave the World Cup like this. I gave everything I had. I did my best and I leave with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said.

The Portuguese captain confirmed that the 2026 edition was his final FIFA World Cup but stressed that he would not make any immediate decision regarding his overall international future.

“I will now spend time with my family and reflect. I don’t make decisions in the heat of the moment,” he added.

“Before Me, Portugal Hadn’t Won Anything”

While the World Cup trophy remained the one major title missing from his extraordinary career, Ronaldo highlighted Portugal’s transformation during his era.

The veteran forward pointed to the country’s three major international trophies achieved during his career:

  • UEFA Euro 2016
  • UEFA Nations League 2019
  • UEFA Nations League 2025

“I have won three titles for Portugal. Before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal hadn’t won a single title,” he said.

Ronaldo also described Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 triumph as being as meaningful to him as winning the FIFA World Cup.

Emotional Farewell After Two Decades on Football’s Biggest Stage

Ronaldo made his World Cup debut in 2006 and represented Portugal across multiple editions of football’s biggest tournament.

Although he finishes as the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football, lifting the FIFA World Cup remained the only major achievement missing from his glittering international résumé.

Images of Ronaldo leaving the pitch in tears quickly spread across social media, with football fans across the world paying tribute to one of the sport’s greatest-ever players.

Ronaldo Thanks Portugal Coach Roberto Martinez

Ronaldo also praised Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez, who reportedly decided to step down following the team’s elimination.

“I loved working with him. He’s a great coach and an even better human being. What he has done for Portugal deserves recognition. I wish him all the best,” Ronaldo said.

Spain Set Historic FIFA World Cup Record

While Ronaldo’s farewell dominated headlines, Spain also created history with its victory.

The Spanish national team registered its sixth consecutive World Cup clean sheet, setting a new tournament record. Goalkeeper Unai Simón extended his shutout streak to 609 consecutive minutes, surpassing the previous World Cup record held by Italy legend Walter Zenga.

Spain’s defensive consistency has made them one of the strongest contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title as they prepare for a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against Belgium.
