ISKCON Subhadra Devi controversy

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has drawn fresh criticism after referring to Goddess Subhadra as “Smt Subhadra Devi” in a social‑media post about the Rath Yatra, a phrasing devotees say misrepresents the traditional Jagannath culture.

In its post on X, ISKCON wrote: “The Rath Yatra is a divine pastime of Lord Jagannath who along with Lord Balabhadra and Smt Subhadra Devi come out on their chariot to bestow their darshan and blessings on to one and all.” The wording quickly sparked objections from devotees, who argued that the respectful form of address should be “Maa Subhadra Devi.”

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik also weighed in, urging ISKCON to revise the message. In his reply on X, Pattnaik said, “In the Jagannath tradition, devotees address Her as ‘Maa Subhadra Devi’ with deep reverence. I humbly request that this wording be reviewed and updated to better reflect the devotional culture and tradition of Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannath.”

The controversy adds to ISKCON’s ongoing criticism for conducting Rath Yatras abroad on non‑traditional dates, which many devotees believe undermines the sanctity of the festival. Cultural observers have called for greater sensitivity and adherence to Jagannath customs in ISKCON’s global communications.
