Aamir Khan Breaks Silence on Fatwa, ‘Love Jihad’ Allegations After Marrying Gauri Spratt

Actor Aamir Khan has responded to the controversy surrounding his marriage to longtime partner Gauri Spratt, dismissing allegations of “love jihad” and criticism over their interfaith union.

The Bollywood star, who married Gauri in an intimate ceremony on July 5 under the Special Marriage Act, said the criticism has become increasingly absurd, remarking that “life is getting more comical as time passes.”

Why Aamir Khan’s marriage sparked controversy

The couple’s wedding, held at Aamir’s residence in Mumbai’s Bandra, was attended by around 150 close friends and family members, including his children Junaid, Ira, Azad, and Gauri’s son.

Soon after the wedding, Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane described the marriage as an example of “love jihad.” Separately, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, reportedly issued a fatwa, stating that under Sharia law, a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam.

Aamir Khan rejects conversion claims

In an interview with Rediff, Aamir clarified that neither Gauri nor his former spouses converted to Islam because all his marriages were solemnised through civil law.

“The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian.”

He further added:

“Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes.”

A relationship spanning decades

Aamir had publicly confirmed his relationship with Gauri Spratt on his 60th birthday, revealing that they had known each other for nearly 25 years before reconnecting and eventually deciding to marry.

The couple chose to formalise their relationship through a civil marriage under the Special Marriage Act, which allows people of different faiths to marry without requiring religious conversion.

An inclusive family, says Aamir

Addressing the criticism, Aamir emphasised that his family has long embraced interfaith relationships and mutual respect for different beliefs.

His remarks come amid continued public debate over interfaith marriages and personal choices involving celebrities.
