A tense moment unfolded during an IPL 2026 clash between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, as batter Nitish Rana was penalised following a heated exchange with the umpire.
What Triggered the On-Field Confrontation
The incident took place in the 19th over of Delhi Capitals’ run chase when Tristan Stubbs requested a change of gloves. The batter appeared uncomfortable and sought fresh equipment during a crucial stage of the match, with the team needing quick runs to stay in contention.
However, the umpire denied the request, citing IPL regulations that allow equipment changes only at the start or end of an over. Rana, who attempted to bring replacement gloves onto the field, was stopped, leading to visible frustration and a heated argument.
Team members, including Karun Nair and head coach Hemang Badani, were present during the exchange.
Match Turning Point: Stubbs’ Dismissal
Moments after the disagreement, Stubbs was dismissed on the very next delivery. Attempting an aggressive shot off Jamie Overton, he was caught at mid-off by Noor Ahmad.
Stubbs departed after scoring 60 runs off 38 balls. His dismissal proved decisive, significantly weakening Delhi Capitals’ chances of completing the chase.
Delhi Capitals Fall Short
Despite a late push, Delhi Capitals could not recover from the setback. With 28 runs required in the final over, Anshul Kamboj delivered a strong finish, taking two wickets and restricting Delhi to 189 runs.
The loss marked another setback for the team in the ongoing season.
Disciplinary Action Against Rana
Following the incident, Rana was found guilty of breaching Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to the use of inappropriate language during a match.
He was fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point. The player accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee.
