Thailand Cuts Visa-Free Stay for Indians to 30 Days: New Rules from September 15

Indian passport holders traveling to Thailand will soon see their visa-free stay allowance cut in half. Starting September 15, 2026, Thailand will reduce the permitted duration of visa-exempt stays from 60 days to 30 days for tourists from over 60 countries and territories, including India, China, the US, and European Union member states.

The update follows official notifications published in Thailand’s Royal Gazette on August 31. Under the new regulations, the generous 60-day visa exemption introduced in mid-2024 to boost post-pandemic tourism will be formally repealed.

Why Is the Stay Being Reduced?

Thai immigration officials cite safety concerns and system exploitation as the primary reasons for tightening entry guidelines. Authorities have recently cracked down on foreign nationals misusing tourist entry permissions to run illegal businesses, overstay, or participate in organized crime, drug offences, and human trafficking.

Former Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow highlighted that capping the entry period helps curb visa system abuse while keeping doors open for legitimate holidaymakers.

What Changes for Indian Travelers?

  • No Visa Required: Indian citizens maintain visa-free privileges for short-term visits.
  • 30-Day Limit: Entry on or after September 15 grants a maximum stay of 30 days instead of 60.
  • Grace Period for Prior Entry: Visitors entering Thailand on or before September 14 will retain their full 60-day permission period.
  • Land Border Caps: Travelers crossing via land checkpoints can use the visa exemption a maximum of twice per calendar year. Air and sea arrivals face no set entry count limits.

Impact on Tourists

Industry analysts note that the revised policy will hardly impact the average Indian vacationer, who typically spends 7 to 10 days exploring destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya. However, long-term backpackers, remote workers, digital nomads, and frequent border-hoppers will need to plan carefully or apply for formal e-visas if they intend to stay beyond 30 days.

Extensions beyond the 30-day window will remain accessible at Thai immigration offices inside the country, granted at the discretion of immigration officers.
