The flood situation in Dasarathpur block of Jajpur district has worsened, forcing the closure of 65 schools on Wednesday as rising river water levels and waterlogging disrupted education for thousands of students.
The District Education Office ordered suspension of classes in government, government‑aided and private institutions across the block, covering elementary, secondary and higher secondary schools. However, the affected buildings will remain open for rescue and rehabilitation operations if required.
The decision came as the Baitarani River continued to flow above its danger mark of 18.33 metres at Akhuapada, following incessant rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
Floodwaters have inundated 19 gram panchayats, affecting nearly 60 villages. Breaches at Dobabil Patana and Kantapada in Tarpada panchayat, along with damage near Jayantara Mahapatra Sahi, have heightened concern.
For students, the prolonged flooding has brought education to a standstill. Children from the affected panchayats have reportedly missed classes for over a month, with school buildings and roads submerged. Many families have taken shelter on rooftops, embankments, or at relief centres, while floodwater has damaged books and study materials.
Parents have urged the government to arrange alternative learning options as the matriculation exams approach, fearing further academic setbacks if the situation persists.
