An Indian national was among four people shot dead in the United States in what police believe was a domestic dispute, authorities said on Saturday. The incident occurred in Gwinnett County’s Lawrenceville area near Atlanta, sending shockwaves through the local community.

While initial local reports did not confirm the nationality of the victims, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta later confirmed that one of those killed was an Indian citizen, adding that assistance is being extended to the bereaved family.

What Happened

According to Gwinnett County Police, the suspect has been identified as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar, who allegedly opened fire at the residence of his relatives on Brook Ivy Court. One of the victims was his wife, 43-year-old Meemu Dogra.

The other victims were identified as:

  • Gourav Kumar (33)

  • Nidhi Chander (37)

  • Harish Chander (38)

Based on their names, all appeared to be of Indian origin, though official confirmation of nationality has been provided for only one individual so far.

Argument Preceded the Shooting

Investigators said Vijay Kumar and his wife lived in Atlanta and had travelled with their 12-year-old child to the home of their relatives, where the shooting took place. Police revealed that the couple had argued at their Atlanta residence before leaving for Brook Ivy Court.

Gourav, Nidhi, and Harish lived at the Lawrenceville home with their two children, aged 7 and 9.

Children Found Hiding, Son Alerted Police

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered three children—aged 12, 7, and 9—hiding inside a closet, attempting to protect themselves. Police said it was the suspect’s 12-year-old son who called 911, prompting the emergency response.

Officers found four people dead at the scene. No other suspects are being sought.

“At this time, there are no outstanding suspects. The motive remains under investigation but appears to be domestic-related,” local police said in a statement.

Consulate Expresses Grief

Without naming the victim, the Indian Consulate in Atlanta said in a post on X:
“We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute, in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family.”

Charges Filed

Reports said the suspect was apprehended a short distance from the residence and has been charged with multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children. The investigation remains ongoing.
