Rumesh Pathirage Throws 92.07m in Zurich, Joins Elite 92m Club As Pressure Mounts On Neeraj Chopra

Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Pathirage continued his remarkable 2026 season with another huge throw, launching the spear 92.07 metres to win the Zurich Diamond League meet.

The 23-year-old saved his best effort for the final round at Letzigrund Stadium, breaking the 92m barrier for the second time in his career and underlining his growing dominance in men’s javelin.

Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second with a season-best 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third with a personal-best 85.16m.

Pathirage entered the Zurich competition as the world leader after setting a Sri Lankan national record of 92.62m in Rome in June.

His start in Zurich was relatively modest, with an opening throw of 81.50m. However, he quickly found his rhythm, improving to 88.23m in his second attempt before recording 89.90m in the third round.

After an 84.91m effort in the fourth round and a foul in the fifth, Pathirage delivered his biggest throw of the evening with his final attempt.

The 92.07m effort not only secured the Zurich title but also placed Pathirage in an exclusive group.

Pathirage joins elite 92m club

Pathirage has now become only the fourth javelin thrower in history to breach 92 metres twice, joining Jan Železný, Johannes Vetter and Aki Parviainen.

His extraordinary consistency has made him the athlete to beat this season. Pathirage has won 11 of his 12 competitions in 2026, including his last six appearances.

His impressive run has included Diamond League victories and a historic Commonwealth Games title, where he became Sri Lanka’s first men’s javelin champion at the event.

His first 92m-plus throw came in Rome, where his 92.62m national record established him as the world’s leading javelin thrower this season.

Neeraj Chopra faces major challenge

Pathirage’s latest performance comes at a crucial time for Neeraj Chopra, who is set to compete at the Diamond League final in Brussels next week.

The Sri Lankan has already defeated Chopra three times this year, including at the Lausanne Diamond League meet last week.

In Lausanne, Pathirage won with an 88.14m throw, edging Chopra by just nine centimetres.

Chopra did not compete in Zurich, giving Pathirage another opportunity to extend his advantage and build momentum heading into the season-ending showdown.

With Pathirage now repeatedly threatening the 92m mark, Chopra faces a formidable challenge in Brussels. The Indian two-time Olympic medallist will need a major performance if he is to stop the Sri Lankan’s extraordinary winning run.

The Diamond League final now promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated javelin contests of the season, with Pathirage arriving in red-hot form and Chopra looking to reclaim the advantage.
