India’s dismal run in the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024–25 extended on Saturday as the team succumbed to a heavy 3-6 loss against Belgium in Antwerp.
This marks their seventh consecutive defeat, compounding concerns ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
Belgium stormed out of the blocks, earning two penalty corners within the first 20 seconds. Arthur Van Doren struck early off a rebound, setting the tone for the match. Just before halftime, Alexander Hendrickx doubled the lead with a well-executed penalty corner conversion.
Despite the early blows, India rallied after the break. Dilpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh netted quick goals in the third quarter to level the match at 2-2. The momentum, however, proved short-lived.
Roman Duvekot, Thibeau Stockbroekx, and Tom Boon took advantage of India’s defensive vulnerabilities in the final quarter, sealing a dominant win. Van Doren added his second, capitalising on a deflection that beat Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera. Amit Rohidas offered a late reply with a penalty corner strike, but Boon’s goal in the dying minutes buried any hopes of a comeback.
India’s lack of cohesion and lapses in concentration continue to haunt their Pro League campaign, raising questions about the team’s tactical preparedness and depth as the season progresses.
